Want To Be an AI Prompter?
I asked ChatGPT to identify the skill needs for a generative AI prompter role With no further ‘prompts’ I received the following response (good work Chat!!!)
‘An AI prompter’ typically requires a combination of technical, creative, and interpersonal skills:
- Technical Skills:
- Understanding of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms.
- Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in AI development, such as Python, Java, or C++.
- Knowledge of AI frameworks and libraries like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or OpenAI’s GPT.
- Ability to generate engaging and contextually appropriate prompts that inspire meaningful conversations.
- Understanding of storytelling techniques and narrative structures to craft compelling prompts.
- Capacity to think outside the box and generate diverse prompts that cater to different preferences and interests.
- Interpersonal Skills:
- Empathy and emotional intelligence to understand and respond appropriately to user input.
- Effective communication skills to convey prompts clearly and facilitate smooth interactions.
- Adaptability to adjust prompts based on user responses and maintain the flow of conversation.
- Problem-Solving Abilities:
- Aptitude for troubleshooting technical issues that may arise during prompt generation or interaction with users.
- Critical thinking skills to analyze user feedback and iteratively improve prompt quality.
- Resourcefulness to find creative solutions to challenges encountered in prompt design and implementation.
- Ethical Considerations:
- Awareness of ethical principles and potential biases in AI prompt generation.
- Commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity in prompt design to ensure equitable user experiences.
- Responsibility to prioritize user privacy and data security when designing and deploying AI prompter systems.
- Continuous Learning:
- Willingness to stay updated on advancements in AI technology and incorporate new techniques or methodologies into prompt generation.
- Openness to feedback from users and colleagues to refine prompter skills and enhance overall performance.
Overall, an effective AI prompter combines technical expertise with creativity, empathy, and problem-solving abilities to deliver engaging and meaningful interactions with users.’

Well no surprises there. One of the things that interests me is that this set of skills described by Chat GPT is similar in many ways to the tech and personal skill requirements for very senior roles in the traditional tech space. Jobs like Solutions Architect or Lead Programmer or Software Engineer. The description of prompter skill needs also incorporates other skill sets needed for programmers, business analysists data analysts and so forth. Also it was good to see our Chat including ethical considerations!!
AI prompting is a new field. We already see job role ads for “Prompting Engineer” and similar. However, if you cant find them now you soon will see an evolution and compartmentalisation of AI prompting professional roles. I think an obvious division will be between those that develop technical add ons and integrations to existing AI capabilities (more like your traditional solutions architect or principal software engineer) and roles in the use of AI to analyse and solve problems and create widgets and ‘stuff’- a role that programmers and BA’s have inhabited. One critical area will be in how to monetise prompting solutions and to create ownership or patents. More on that another time. Watch this space and keep asking your friendly Chat GPT more and more questions!
