What is the difference between deferment, suspension and cancellation of enrolment?

At AIAT, an international student’s enrolment can be deferred, suspended or cancelled, as per Standard 9 of the National Code of Practice.

 

Deferring your enrolment

If you’ve been offered a place in a course, you can ask to delay your start for up to a year. You can do this before you accept the offer, after you accept it, or after the issuance of a Confirmation of Enrolment, but prior to the start of the first study period.

An international student who has failed to obtain a visa and/or to arrive before the start of the first study period of study may also apply for a deferment.

Suspending your enrolment

If you need to take some time off from your studies, you can apply for a Leave of Absence. You need to have completed a minimum of two (2) subjects. Normally the duration of your leave will be for a study period or longer and will need to be approved by the Course Director.

Shorter periods of leave should be discussed with the Course Director.

Cancelling your enrolment

A student’s enrolment can be cancelled when the student has:

  • failed to re-enrol
  • an incomplete enrolment
  • applied for a course withdrawal
  • been expelled
  • exceeded the maximum course duration

  • failed to comply with international student visa conditions
